Utopia & Oakbrook Terrace History

Utopia Is Established

The City of Oakbrook Terrace was officially established in 1958 and has grown from a tiny farm town called Utopia, to the growing and thriving city that it is today.

"At Long Last Utopia Is Established"

Happy boosters of the new city of Utopia met Sunday night at the intersection of 22nd St. and Midwest Rd. and set up a sign saying: "Welcome to Utopia." They were celebrating the vote Saturday to incorporate as Utopia the area of slightly less than 4 square miles that has been known as Elmhurst Countryside. The vote was 331 to 164 in favor of incorporation. The Area is in DuPage County, south of Villa Park. It has 1,228 residents, according to Dennis Shanahan, who heads the incorporation committee. The next step after the official tally sometime this week, this is to circulate petitions for election of a city government.
