Maintain city buildings, streets, grounds, equipment, and to provide services to the residents of the City of Oakbrook Terrace.

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Performs routine maintenance and repair on City buildings and facilities; performs routine plumbing, electrical, heating and cooling, carpentry, remodeling, concrete work, roofing, and painting as needed. Performs complex unskilled to semi-skilled labor tasks.
  • Performs maintenance and repair on City equipment and vehicles including routine maintenance and upkeep and complete repair; performs welding and fabrication functions.
  • Performs grounds maintenance functions for all City buildings and facilities including mowing, weeding, trimming, planting, landscaping, watering, bike path maintenance, etc.
  • Performs maintenance and repair work on all city streets including storm water management infrastructure, traffic control device, signs, tree trimming, brush pick-up, right of way maintenance, shoulder work, mailbox program, striping, street-lights, snow and ice removal and plowing, curb replacement, etc.
  • Complete working knowledge of equipment, materials, and supplies used in Public Works with a demonstrated skill in the safe operation of said equipment and materials.
  • Sets up and tears down for special events; places and removes decorations, etc.
  • Assists other departments as needed.

Employees in this position require a greater degree of skill in the performance of their responsibilities than is required of the Maintenance Worker I position in the Department:

  • Assists superintendent in establishing work priorities, preparing work schedules, and leading lower classified Public Services employees.
  • The Maintenance Worker II has contact with vendors: scheduling work and repairs.
  • The Maintenance Worker II must have the ability to work with little or no supervision to complete daily activates according to work schedule.
  • Must be capable of handling on-call and emergency situations.
  • Instructs and advises contract employees to ensure compliance with procedures and specifications.
  • Maintains routine records and prepares periodic reports of work performed.
  • The Maintenance Worker II uses the computer to review weather systems, write memos and keep maintenance logs.
  • May be assigned to act in Director’s absence to direct and assign work.

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

  • High school diploma or equivalent with vocational/technical training in trades or equipment maintenance/operation courses and five years of public works and equipment maintenance/operation experience, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.  Position requires Class B Illinois Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement and Motor Carrier License.
  • Some weekend, holiday, early morning and/or night work may be required. Overtime is expected when it is required by the position’s workload.
  • The successful candidate will have good mechanical ability.

  • Requires the ability to communicate orally and in writing with the Director and all department personnel, other City departments and agencies, residents and the public.

Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; and to calculate percentages and decimals.

Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objective.

Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental and/or subjective criteria, as opposed to criteria that are clearly measurable or verifiable.

Physical Requirements

Requires the ability to operate, calibrate, tune and synchronize, and perform complex rapid adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as a computer and other office machines, heavy equipment and vehicles, tools, and/or related materials used in performing essential functions.

Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs in performing skilled movements such as equipment maintenance and repair.

Tasks involve the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling moderately heavy (50 – 100 lbs.) objects and materials.

Requires the ability to recognize and identify degrees of similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes, sounds, and textures associated with job-related objects, materials, and tasks.

Environmental Adaptability

Ability to work under potentially dangerous and uncomfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors may cause discomfort and where there is a risk of injury and moderate possibility of loss of limb.

Salary:

Starting salary for this position is $58,549 or depending on qualifications and experience.  This position includes a very competitive benefit package while working 40-hour work schedules plus any required overtime assigned by the Director of Public Works.
